r/BaseBuildingGames on Reddit: What game popularized the factory building game genre?

This is a subreddit focused on base building computer games. If you came here for real estate or fitness advice, you might be in the wrong place. ... Just curious if there is one definitive factory building game.To me, although its not exactly factory building game, it's Oxygen Not Included from 2017 early access. It got me into games with logistics, raw products in, finished product out loop. I never thought it would be so much fun. It is unlike anything i've ever played before and the complexity hidden beneath cutesy graphics got me hooked so much i spent around 2500 hours on it.The original Factorio was perfect, but each time they announce a new thing for 2.0 and Space Age, base Factorio becomes a little bit more literally unplayable. ... Yah every feature coming is another one I’m desperately waiting for. ... biggest tip for this game: don't look stuff up it'll ruin your fun otherwise go ham and always remember: THE FACTORY MUST GROWI'm sure factorio is great but everytime I try to get into it the graphics kill it for me. :-( ... I thought the same thing and held out for the longest time. But honestly, after getting crazy into it, i wouldn't change the graphics for anything... especially since they "finalized" everything and released version 1.0. (I bought the game in the middle of its early access on Steam.)

More advanced items will require using some of the previously constructed items and may require several subassemblies. When you start, there’ll only be a handful of items available to you.As you build items in the game, you’ll discover new items. Once you’ve started building, you can also start selling. Selling things will get you the money that you need for the parts to build the next thing you want to build. The highest margin items will be marked with a dollar bill indicating that they’re finished goods and not used to build subsequent items. Once you’ve discovered enough items, you can begin automating your factory by constructing various machine parts, like robot arms, conveyors, and so on, combining them into builders. It’s a fun little game to play for a while. Unfortunately, once you’ve got your builders maxed out, there’s little left to the game. You can reset and start over, but doing so has no impact on the game and doesn’t further any objectives.

Satisfactory, the Popular Open World Factory-Building Game, Is Finally Coming to PS5 | Push Square

Console release date confirmed - Coffee Stain Studios has announced a console port of its massively popular sci-fi factory-building game, Satisfactory. Deve... Hopefully the PS5 port is a good one, because it sounds like this will be a great factory title for the console. There aren't too many games of this ilk on PS5, so it could be pretty popular when it arrives later in the year.I feel a word of warning is warranted: This is one of those games that is secretly a time machine - you start the game and in a blink of an eye, it's next morning. Very dangerous! (It is currently taking up waaaaay too much of my free time) ... @FuriousMachine My first month with Satisfactory was basically 17:00 clock out of my real job, 17:01 clock into my factory job.I basically tried the Battlefield 6 beta just to test out if it support m&k on PS5 (it does) and that confirmed my purchase, it makes first person games so much better. ... @GeeEssEff my secret has been to use Satisfactory calculator to do all fiddly calculations for me. With the computer factory I just said I want X number of computers a minute (then turned this down a bunch till I got a number of refineries that didn't make me want to cry) and then followed that. We've made an agreement that I will have designated connection points in the factories for them to connect stuff up without messing up my (slightly) neat and orderly system. ... @Glassneedles Haha that sounds like me and my cousin. I introduced him to the game (he’s already doubled my hours on it) and called myself the foreman while I showed him the ropes.

Kaizen: A Factory Story review | Rock Paper Shotgun

Like I say, Kaizen isn't a Zachtronics game - that company closed down. But everyone you know and like who worked there now make similar things as Coincidence. The result is another satisfactory brainscratcher about plopping down pistons and whirlers and fusers and twirlers, all in an effort to make the best production line for a pair of jogging shorts or the best personal computer of 1986. Kaizen: A Factory ... Kaizen: A Factory Story - Release Date Trailer | Open-Ended Puzzle Automation GameProtagonist David comes to Japan thinking he'll be a big player in the business side of Matsuzawa Manufacturing, but he ends up working on the factory floor. There he might have to jam together a cheap radio or cut collars into t-shirts with razor gadgets. As it turns out, that's fine too. The characters often chat about the future, making comical (sometimes even accurate) predictions. | Image credit: Rock Paper Shotgun / Astra Logical · The puzzles themselves are more jigsaw-like than previous games by the same designers.Sometimes the most efficient solution is simply the one that lets you hit the big green button to start the factory up. In Opus Magnum, a previous game from these developers (and still my favourite of all their work) the machinery I built often had a synchronous beauty. But there's another, calm and casual sense in which you can say something is fine. Like when a friend handing you some tea apologises because they "only have semi-skimmed milk". S'fine. Or when they say "nah, let's go to a different pub". Sure, fine! You're just happy to hang out. Kaizen: A Factory Story is a fine game.

Modulus looks like a must-play factory game for anyone who loves a thousand little parts on a hundred conveyor belts moving in perfect rhythm | PC Gamer

Modulus also has an extra hook: designing your own factory parts. Platforms Five new Steam games you probably missed (June 23, 2025) ... Modulus also has an extra hook: designing your own factory parts.Joy in factory building and automation games is a spectrum. For the most engineering-brained, the efficiency of a perfectly balanced input-output system is king. For artists it's having a canvas to design assembly lines that aren't just efficient, but beautiful. For those with Gamer Brain, joy comes from the progression of producing small parts that can be used to make bigger parts that will eventually lead to a mega factory operating at a scale they never could've dreamed of at the start. But underneath all that, I'm pretty sure everyone who loves factory games is an absolute mark for a bunch of little objects trundling along on a conveyor belt while a bunch of machines animate in mesmerizing rhythm.

But WAS that really true at the time? I have reason to believe that it was NOT the case here.If The Games Factory really "was" what it claimed being a "worlds first" of something, then it must have a really good reason for it. Though I REALLY feel like something else should actually have that claim of being a worlds first computer/video game creation tool.In fact we carried that distinction forward from Klik and Play which was released in 1994, The Games Factory itself wasn't released until later as around the third iteration of the Click series of Game Development Tools.A subreddit dedicated to the late AlphaDream's hit handheld series: Mario & Luigi. Factory Games are fast becoming the best gener in gaming. :: eXplorminate

So every now and then, we see a new genre emerge in gaming. It’s not as rare as you might think. Even if we ignore the birth of mobile gaming, we observe brand new genres popping up fairly regularly. While games like Doom, Heroes of Might and Magic, Master of Orion, XCOM, Space Invaders, ... While games like Doom, Heroes of Might and Magic, Master of Orion, XCOM, Space Invaders, and others are lauded, people tend to forget that many game archetypes, such as Hidden Objects, Meme Games, Job Simulators, Board Game Conversions, Idle Games, Survival Games, etc., are actually quite recent additions to the gaming landscape. Back in 2013, one of these new genres came into being with a game called Factorio, known as Factory Games or Automation Games. They are mentally stimulating, almost like puzzle games. They tap into a fundamental human desire for creation. The construction of a functional "factory" that takes days to build—not merely aesthetic but actually operational—brings an incredibly satisfying feeling as you sit and watch it do its thing. You build these worlds, set them up, make them beautiful, and then watch them go. I think that’s key: unlike Lego or, say, Minecraft, there is a function to the form. These games have come a long way since Factorio was released in 2013, and we’re just beginning to see the genre branch out, expanding beyond the base core concept. For example, there’s Hero Factory, where you construct RPG-style heroes from statistics like Strength, Intelligence, skills, and the like, then send them to fight in automated battles. This flips the genre on its head, allowing the player to design and optimise their own "products" to fulfil a task rather than the game providing a product for them to build.
